True Riches - 30 July, 2026

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God." — 1 Timothy 6:17

It is easy to overlook how blessed we are. Many of the conveniences we enjoy every day, clean drinking water, electricity, medicine, transportation, refrigeration, and an abundance of food, were unavailable to most people throughout history. What seems ordinary to us would have been considered extraordinary by many generations before us.

Remembering this should cultivate gratitude rather than pride. Every good thing we enjoy ultimately comes from God, who lovingly provides for His creation (James 1:17). Instead of taking these blessings for granted, we should receive them with thankful hearts and use them wisely for His glory.

When Paul instructed Timothy to warn "those who are rich in this present world," his words are still relevant today. While not everyone is wealthy by today's standards, many of us possess resources and comforts that much of the world has never known. Therefore, we should honestly examine our hearts and ask whether our possessions have become the source of our confidence.

Arrogance is not limited to those who openly boast about their wealth. It can quietly develop whenever we begin to depend more on our possessions than on God. Jesus reminded His followers to "seek first the kingdom of God" (Matthew 6:33), and He warned that "one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" (Luke 12:15). Material blessings are temporary, but our relationship with God has eternal value.

God entrusts us with resources not merely for our comfort but also to bless others and advance His kingdom. Paul continues by urging believers "to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share" (1 Timothy 6:18). As faithful stewards, we have the privilege and responsibility to use what God has given us to serve those in need and to support His work.

Whether we have much or little, our greatest need is Jesus Christ. Because of His death and resurrection, forgiveness and eternal life are freely offered to everyone who repents and believes in Him (John 3:16; Acts 16:31). Each day we are called to trust Him, walk in obedience, and find our security not in earthly wealth but in the eternal riches found in Christ.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for every blessing You have given me. Keep me from trusting in material things. Help me to use what You have entrusted to me wisely, to be generous toward others, and to place my hope in You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
