The Wisdom That Pleases God - 27 July, 2026

"Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil..." - 1 Kings 3:9

If someone were to ask you, "If you could have one thing from God today, what would you ask for?" many answers might come to mind. Some would ask for good health, financial security, a successful career, a happy family, or relief from life's burdens. Such desires are understandable because we all face real needs. Yet the answer we give often reveals what our hearts value most.

In today's passage, the Lord Himself appeared to Solomon and invited him to ask for whatever he desired (1 Kings 3:5). Rather than seeking personal comfort or earthly success, Solomon asked for a discerning heart and wisdom to govern God's people faithfully. His concern was not first for himself but for fulfilling the responsibility God had entrusted to him. This request pleased the Lord because it reflected humility, dependence, and a desire to glorify God rather than self (1 Kings 3:10-14).

What is equally striking is what Solomon did not ask for. He did not ask for greater riches, though wealth often captivates the human heart. He did not ask for a long life, freedom from suffering, or victory over his enemies. Instead, he recognized that without God's wisdom, every other blessing would eventually be misused. Wisdom is not merely intelligence or life experience. According to Scripture, true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10). It is the God-given ability to think, choose, and live according to His revealed will.

This is a lesson every believer needs. In our prayers we often focus on changing our circumstances, but God is more concerned with transforming our hearts. He may not immediately remove every trial, but He promises wisdom to those who ask in faith (James 1:5). Biblical wisdom enables us to respond to suffering with patience, success with humility, temptation with discernment, and every decision with a desire to please Christ. It teaches us to seek first God's kingdom rather than earthly gain (Matthew 6:33) and to set our minds on things above, where Christ is seated (Colossians 3:1-2).

The greatest wisdom is ultimately found in Jesus Christ, "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3). As we walk with Him through His Word and depend upon His Spirit, He shapes our minds and hearts to live in a manner that honors God. Therefore, let our greatest prayer not simply be for an easier life, but for greater wisdom to faithfully live the life God has given us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You have blessed me far beyond what I deserve, and I thank You for Your daily provisions. Today I ask not first for more possessions, better health, or an easier life, but for the wisdom that comes from above. Help me to fear You, trust Your Word, and make decisions that honor Christ in every area of my life. Shape my heart so that I desire Your will above my own, and enable me to live faithfully for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
