When Your Little Is Enough For Jesus - 5 August, 2026

"As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, 'This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.' Jesus replied, 'They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.' 'We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,' they answered. 'Bring them here to me,' he said." — Matthew 14:15–18

Have you ever looked at your monthly budget and realized that the numbers simply do not work? No matter how carefully you calculate, there seems to be more month than money. Or perhaps you have faced responsibilities that far exceeded your strength, wisdom, or ability. Those moments remind us how limited we truly are.

The disciples experienced that same feeling. Thousands of people had followed Jesus into a remote place, and evening was approaching. Seeing the hungry crowd, the disciples calculated what they had and concluded it was impossible to meet the need. Their solution seemed practical: send the people away so they could buy food for themselves. But Jesus gave them an unexpected command: "You give them something to eat." All they could find was a boy's lunch: five loaves of bread and two fish (John 6:9). Humanly speaking, it was nowhere near enough.

Yet Jesus was not asking them to meet the need by their own strength. He simply asked them to place what little they had into His hands. After they brought it to Him, Jesus gave thanks, broke the bread, and miraculously multiplied it. Everyone ate until they were satisfied, and twelve baskets of leftovers were gathered afterward (Matthew 14:19–21). What was insufficient in the disciples' hands became more than enough in the hands of the Savior.

How often we make the same mistake. We measure our resources: our finances, abilities, time, strength, or opportunities, and become discouraged because they seem so small. God never asks us to depend on ourselves. Instead, He invites us to trust Him and faithfully offer what we have. Throughout Scripture, God delights in working through human weakness so that His power may be clearly seen (2 Corinthians 12:9–10; Zechariah 4:6).

This truth is even more important when we think about our salvation. None of us possesses enough goodness or righteousness to earn God's acceptance. "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). No amount of good works can remove our guilt (Ephesians 2:8–9; Titus 3:5). That is why God, in His great love, sent His Son into the world (John 3:16). Jesus lived the perfectly obedient life we could never live, died on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins, and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). Forgiveness and eternal life are freely offered to everyone who repents and believes in Him (Acts 20:21; Romans 10:9–13).

Perhaps today you feel that your strength is not enough, your faith is weak, or your resources are limited. Do not let your insufficiency keep you from Christ. Bring your "not enough" to Him. The Savior who fed the multitude is still able to provide for His people according to His perfect wisdom and timing (Philippians 4:19). He often begins His greatest works with what seems small, so that all the glory belongs to Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I confess that I often focus on what I lack instead of trusting in Your power and faithfulness. Help me to place my life, my needs, and my limited resources into Your hands. Strengthen my faith to trust You, and use what I offer for Your glory. Thank You for providing not only for my daily needs but also for my greatest need through Your death and resurrection. In Your name I pray. Amen.
